Mk4 Brake ReplacementFront BrakesStep 1: Take the brakes apart Locate the nuts at the back of the calipers. Get the caliper in your hands to work with it, tie it up as a backup for if it slips from your hands. This avoids dangerous strain on the brakeline. Step 2: Remove the pads Step 3: Remove the old rotor Remove this little screw and it comes right off, clean in behind while we're here. Of course, be careful not to inhale the brake dust, you probably don't want much in your eyes either. But hey, I'm not your mother. Step 4: Clean caliper Step 5: Attach the caliper to the car again Step 6: Paint caliper Step 7: Wait for drying Step 8: Rig up dongle to turn off pad wear indicator light. Cut the plug and some wire from the old pads. Skin things back, and cut one lead shorter than the other. Loop the long one back and join with solder. Close things up with two layers of shrink tube, makes a nice dongle. Step 9: Put new rotors in place and attach rotor screw Step 10: Put the brake quite on the pad backs Step 11: Recess the piston. Make sure the brake reservoir is open and the watch the fluid level as the pistons will push the fluid up through. Step 13: Replace caliper onto the car and re-install the retaining clip. Rear > |
