Post 4 to 5 bolt swap.
is it worth the trouble?

I've seen people talk about some sort of $50 kit, which sounds sketch to me. I was thinking of finding a partout and taking everything i need there.

motivation:
- I like quite a few of the 5 bolt mk4 wheels, which are easier and cheaper to obtain than almost every mk3 wheel I like
- I dont like having drums on the back, because while they were replaced last year, I never want ot do that again.

I think the cheaper ways to do it involve using adapters. That way makes the most sense if you want to keep your existing brake set-up. I think it would be ideal to do a disk brake swap for the rears and run adapters all around since the GLX brakes are a little more expensive.

thats not a bad idea since the adapters give me a bit of extra space.

Have you seen 4x100 to 5x100 adapters?
They have one overlaping hole

Adaptech? I thought they made these, or at least rotors and hubs with both patterns on them?

the benifit to the full swap tho is the better front geometry and bigger brakes. potentially another longterm complication is rotors. which ones would you run on the special 4/5 bolt hubs? redrill 10.1s? can you use the 280mm? are you then cornered into one supplier only rotors?

personally, what i'd do is go to a yard with a passat vr (every yard has one!) and get the knuckles, driveshafts, front calipers, balljoints, rear calipers and rear spindles. then buy new mk3 vr control arms with the bushings (bout 100bux) and then the usual brake components and you're set. given the benifits of the plus suspension, i really wouldn't do it 1/2way.

sure, all in you're lookin at $500 BUT you've got a setup that will really be an improvement.

Although I agree with you 100%, I would say just keep the 4 bolt and upgrade to g60 disc brakes. Simply because more torque to the wheels + the possibility of running wider wheels without having to do fender work > plus suspension.

Adapters are nice but you're still looking at $400ish to get them too.. G60 would be a nice upgrade though but that's not what the OP was looking for

no, its not what I was originally asking for, exactly, but I also dont know a lot of my mk3 options. this is very interesting.

*makes notes*

MK3s are my kung fu... and my kung fu is strong.

pm speedball30, he had a complete 5 bolt subframe looking for a new home about a month ago.
