VW 504/507 Oil, which do you use?
So, for those with engines that need 504/507 Approved oil, what do you use and where do you get it? So far the only one I have seen is from the dealership (Castrol SLX Professional LL03 5w-30). Booya. $9.99 after tax a bottle.

Mobil 1 ESP, you can purchase in bulk at Fournel's (Esso distribution centre), on Merivale.

I just use what Gord puts in.
Since Elf got sold to a US company, he's switched back to Total, I believe.

For 10$ a bottle, I think I'll just pick up my oil at VW. Considering it's what Audi recommends for it, that's what I'll put in it.

This is for the R8, then? And you're balking at >$10/litre? No doubt the initial change is 5k kms or so, but beyond that... you're easily 15k between changes, which is probably going to be one change per year? I doubt the ESP will be much more expensive... a couple of bucks/litre, maybe, to get an oil with an established and proven track record for superior protection and longevity. http://avlube.com/mo1espfo5wvw.htmlI run Mobil Delvac 1 ESP (5W40; does not carry the 504/507 designation, but is a CJ-4 oil), and I can show you my own analysis stats on Mobil 1 vs dealer Castrol... wear rates (Fe ppm/1000 km) with Castrol are at ~3, with ESP it's at ~0.5. Delvac runs me ~$10.50/L at Fournels. The choice is pretty clear, IMO. PS - the R8 didn't come with scheduled service included during the warranty period? Otherwise... enjoy changing the oil on a dry sump setup...!

I'm sure the service interval is shorter when you actually use an R8 for it's purpose

Re: VW 504/507 Oil, which do you use?
Ya, we paid for the audi maintenance program... I'll probably change my oil more often than they want to... I'm not balking at the price, I just want to make sure that I use the approved oil. That is all. I was just trying to find a litre of approved oil so I can top it up when it needs it.
If you say the Mobil1 ESP 5w30 is better than the Castol SLX LL03, then fine, sure fire your data my way, it would be interesting to see. At this point, I'm sure that the Castrol is what is in there. I just want to be very sure that the car gets 504/507 oil - Audi is likely going to be very particular about the oil getting used in this engine if I'm ever going to need to have a warranty claim...
